ADVANCE Sponsors a Successful Summer Research Scholars Program for Under-Represented Minority Undergraduates

ADVANCE Faculty Affairs and Diversity Office sponsored a new summer program for high achieving under-represented minority students from institutions outside UNC Charlotte. A total of 8 under-represented minority students participated in the program. The goal is provide students with the opportunity to gain experience in research and professional development in their field of interest. In addition to mentored research activities, the ADVANCE scholars joined the Charlotte Research Scholars to participate in weekly professional development training to build skills critical to professional success. Topics included: responsible conduct of research, developing a competitive research fellowship application, preparing an academic resume, professional communication tools, and a session on preparing for graduate school.

ADVANCE would like to thank the Charlotte Research Scholars program, the Graduate School and Academic Affairs for their help and support in this, the inaugural year of the ADVANCE Summer Scholars Program, and also the UNC Charlotte faculty who so generously gave their time to mentor the summer scholars.
